Our history

Dr Geoffrey and Dr Coralie Porter

Eye Care Queensland, formerly Porter Eye Care, was founded by Doctors Geoffrey and Coralie Porter.

After a period of practicing general medicine in rural Queensland, Dr Geoffrey Porter (MBBS UQ FRANZCO) returned to Brisbane and the PA Hospital in 1963; where he qualified as an Ophthalmologist in 1965. Aided by his wife Dr Coralie Porter – a very successful General Practitioner in her own right – Dr Geoffrey began practicing at both the Wickham Terrace and Paterson House in Annerley.

In 1976, Dr Geoffrey built Specialist Medical Centre at 8 Mountain Street in Mount Gravatt; which stands today in conjunction with Paterson House as our two private practice locations.

A pioneer in suburban specialist eye services, Dr Geoffrey was able to provide better access to specialist care in the community. Up until that point in time this was mostly only available in the CBD of Brisbane. In addition to this, Dr Geoffrey was renowned for his early morning starts (5am or earlier), and even practised on Saturdays and alternate Sundays.

Over his 45 years working as an Ophthalmologist in Brisbane, Dr Geoffrey was well known for his availability at any time of day to care for patients when needed.

Over the last 20 years his son Rowan and daughter Neroli have continued the care his patients and kept the practice at the forefront of eye care in Brisbane. Dr Andrew Kleinschmidt whose family have been friends for generations, joined the practice in 2004. We have been joined by a number of colleagues with special interests that add breadth to eye care at our practice.

The legacy of our founders is apparent through the doctors and staff at our practice conveying a culture of persoanal care. While not starting at 5am these days we readily take emergency bookings from local GPs and Optometrists and extend clinic days to suit patient needs. We provide the best standard of care in a compassionate caring environment.
